CENTRAL ISLIP, NY — The Farmingville man who has been accused of stabbing his estranged wife to death, in an attack that left a teenager hurt, pleaded not guilty to a murder charge in his First District Court in Central Islip on Tuesday, online court documents indicated.

Marcos Marques-Leal, 57, was arrested and taken to the hospital under guard Friday after investigators say he attacked Adriana Barbosa, 46, inside her Granny Road home at around 8:15 p.m. on Friday, then stabbed himself, Suffolk police said.

A child relative, in her teens, who was home during the bloody attack, suffered superficial wounds when she tried to put an end to it, according to police.

A temporary order of protection was issued, and Leal was remanded without bail, the documents show.

He was represented by Michael Seth Ross of Hauppauge.

Police said Leal and Barbosa did not live together, and no one else was in the unit, but there was a downstairs tenant who was home at the time of the stabbing.

There were "a few non-violent domestic calls" over the past few months, according to police.

The motive for the attack is under investigation, a police spokesman said.

Barbosa was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, and the teenager was treated there for non-life-threatening injuries, police said, adding, that Marques-Leal, was also taken there for treatment of serious injuries.

Homicide Squad charged him with second-degree murder, first-degree criminal contempt, and endangering the welfare of a child.

It is still unclear if he has legal representation.

Further information was not released by the police.

It is not clear when the couple separated.\

The couple seemed to have led an idyllic life from photos on Marques-Leal's Facebook page.

Leal, who is from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, shared photos of their wedding, and the couple can be seen holding hands and kissing. His page also features photos of him standing at the foot of the Statue of Liberty, also posts about soccer.

Leal, whose status is listed as single, stopped posting in September.

In a tribute to Barbosa on Facebook, leaders at her church in Selden posted a verse from the Bible, touching on consolation during times of hardship.

The post stated that it was with "a sad heart" that the leadership is extending its deepest condolences "to the family and loved ones of our dear sister," who was "always dedicated to the work of the Lord" and helping people in need.

"As a community of the Brazilian Gospel Church, we mourn with you, and we entrust your soul into the loving arms of our Lord, remembering the promise of eternal life through our Jesus Christ," the post read. "May the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, comfort your hearts in this time of sorrow, and may the memories of her faith, kindness, and love remain as an enduring blessing to all who knew her."

The church's leaders said that anyone who wants to help Barbosa's family "in this time of great sorrow" can do so through a GoFundMe page set up in her honor.

"Thanks in advance for your prayers," the post concluded.

In the post to GoFundMe, organizer Livia Gomes wrote in Spanish that she shared the news of Barbosa's death with a "broken heart."
