HOLTSVILLE, NY — Showcase Cinemas reopened the temporarily shuttered Island 16: Cinema de Lux in Holtsville on Friday after officials cited a defective fire detection system two days earlier.
The Showcase Cinemas Team notified patrons in an email on Friday night.
"Thank you for your patience and understanding, and we look forward to welcoming you soon," the team stated in an email.
Its management sent out an email to longtime patrons on Thursday afternoon stating that it was "temporarily closed for electrical maintenance."
It was sent to patrons, who have Showcase Cinemas Starpasses, and offered an apology for the inconvenience.
The update was also added to the theater's webpage.
In the email, the theater's management states that patrons could seek refunds by clicking on the link in their confirmation email, or initiating a refund on the theater's mobile app.
It also offered the option of traveling to its sister location, Cinema de Lux Farmingdale.
"Thanks for your patience, and we will be back on the big screen as soon as possible," the email stated
A manager from the theater previously declined to comment.
When the theater was reached on a Friday, a woman who answered the phone directed Patch to email Harbor Lights Entertainment.
The theater is one of the only remaining movie theaters in eastern Long Island, and is very popular due to its location off the Long Island Expressway.
It was shuttered Wednesday morning after Brookhaven officials say they found "a defective fire detection system that must be repaired," town spokesman Drew Scott said.
Chief Fire Marshal Chris Mehrman determined the theater will not be able to open until the system is repaired, according to Scott.
"Fire detection systems in large public buildings are essential to public safety," Scott said. "Also, many of the exterior exit doors in the theater were found to be blocked by snow banks and had to be cleared to be usable."
Patch has reached out to the town.
It is unclear if the electrical issue referred to by the theater's management caused the fire detection system defect.
The theater is located in a mixed-use development with a hotel and several restaurants, including Chili's, On the Border, Monster Crab, and Wendy's.
The theater has 16 screens, including 3-D, Chatters Bar and Grill, two concession stands, and an arcade.
