LONG ISLAND, NY — Time to get the bread and milk — and a big snow shovel.

Long Islanders are looking at the potential for a major snowstorm Sunday heading into Monday, forecasters said Wednesday.

According to John Cristantello, meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Upton, while it's still too early for specifics related to snow totals, there's "an increasing confidence that we'll be seeing something significant Sunday into Monday."

Chances are now better than 50-50 that Long Island will see at least 6 inches of snow, triggering a winter storm warning, he said. "That amount can definitely be higher, depending on the storm track," Cristantello said.

If the storm track gets too close, there's also a chance of sleet, he said.

"Right now, it looks like mostly a snow event with cold temperatures in the 20s across Long Island," Cristantello said.

Forecasters should have more accurate numbers on expected accumulation Thursday, he said.

"There's a good chance that we'll see at least a half a foot of snow," he said.
