BROOKHAVEN TOWN, NY — As the region prepares for Mother Nature to possibly dump more than a foot of snow, Brookhaven officials said they plan to pre-treat the roads ahead of the storm, and will deploy plows and sanders as soon as the snowfall begins.

In a post to the town's Facebook page, Highways Superintendent Dan Losquadro said crews are scheduled to work continuously throughout the event to keep the town's primary and secondary roads passable.

He expects that there will probably be about 250 pieces of town-owned equipment out on the road, plus hired contractors.

"But, really, we say to people, 'Don't go out,'" he said, adding, "Stay home. Watch some football; enjoy yourself, be happy, if you're not one of the people that has to be out there on the road."

"I've said it before; I'll say it again, some people will say, 'Don't go out unless it's an emergency.' I say, 'Don't go out, especially if it's an emergency,'" he said.

Town officials are also asking residents to remove all vehicles from main roads and designated snow routes so plows can operate safely and efficiently, and not to shovel, or blow snow into the roadway, because it creates hazards and slows cleanup operations.

Residents and business owners are also encouraged to clear snow from fire hydrants near their properties, keeping a three-foot radius around hydrants accessible in case fire departments need them.

"Let us do our jobs," Losquadro said. "Let the county, the town, the state employees, get the work done, get this cleaned up, so life can return to normal on Monday."

Garbage collection on Monday in some areas could be delayed, while town recreation centers will be closed, and the town clerk's office will not have late hours on Monday.

Information about service changes, safety advisories, and storm-related resources will be shared as conditions develop.

Town officials are urging residents to stay informed by monitoring local news, town alerts on Channel 18, and on the website, www.Brookhaven ny.gov, and official social media channels for updates throughout the storm.
