LONG ISLAND, NY — Long Island could be hit with another round of snow this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service offered information Tuesday morning on X regarding " a potentially significant coastal storm this weekend. Chances have increased for impactful snow and/or wind along the immediate East Coast, but uncertainty remains rather high with respect to details. Be sure to keep checking for updates."

Cold temperatures are expected to persist in the region through the next week. At the same time, a "high-altitude disturbance" will come out of Canada late in the week, leading to a "strong" surface low-pressure system. "This surface low interacting with the very cold air mass will result in widespread heavy precipitation," the NWS said.

In addition, temperatures are expected to plummet, the NWS said. A cold weather advisory is in effect from midnight Tuesday until 10 a.m. Wednesday, with very cold wind chills, as low as minus 5 degrees expected on Long Island.

"The cold wind chills could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Use caution while traveling outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves," the NWS said.

Brian Ciemnecki, meteorologist with the NWS Office in Upton, said that the models show "significant potential for another storm" this weekend. "We don't have a lot of details. We're monitoring it; it could impact us — or it could stay offshore."

Should the storm hit Long Island, he said, "It will be a snow event," likely Saturday night into Sunday. "But we're a long way out and there's a lot of uncertainty."
